The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India have made regulations called ‘Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations. FSSAI has prepared the Draft “Regulation on Labelling (Claims)”. These are being placed on website on 27/12/12. If the label of a product placed on the market or labelled prior to the date of Regulation is deficient in any manner and to any extent with respect to the provisions of this Regulation, the manufacturer of such products shall ensure compliance with this Regulation within six months from the date of notification of the Regulation.
PackagingThe Food Safety and Standards Authority of India have made regulations called ‘Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011.Every food business operator shall ensure that the labelling and presentation of food, including their shape, appearance or packaging, the packaging materials used, the manner in which they are arranged and the setting in which they are displayed, and the information which is made available about them through whatever medium, does not mislead consumers. A utensil or container made of the metals when used in the preparation, packaging and storing of food shall be according to regulation. Containers made of plastic materials should conform to the following Indian Standards Specification, used as appliances or receptacles for packing or storing whether partly or wholly. Regulations are laid for packaging requirements for Milk and Milk Products, canned food, fruits and vegetables products, canned meat product and drinking water.
